That\u2019s why it is imperative to explore the problem space in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/?p=3572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discover<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">and analyze it in <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/?p=3691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">before starting to <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another generative phase. Using the design criteria that you identified during <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll create concepts that attempt to embody those criteria. During the first part of ideation, the goal is to create as many concepts as you can, without evaluating them \u2014- at least not at the outset.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the U.S. education system tends to focus far more heavily on evaluative thinking than it does on generative thinking, leaving a lot of people uncomfortable with creative processes, like ideation. How many times over the course of your education were you asked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what might be<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what was<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">? And unfortunately, brainstorming has gotten a bad reputation over the years as a failed corporate experiment,<\/span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/?p=1047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which isn\u2019t at all the case<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">When properly prepared for and correctly moderated, idea-generation sessions can be wildly successful. At Daedalus, when we conduct these sessions for our clients, we will often prepare relevant homework for participants in advance of the session to get them thinking about the topics that we are going to cover. We plan in advance how we expect the session to go, from the introduction of the topic, to any background information that needs to be shared, to which of the myriad of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sxsrf=ALeKk00SdTqClBGHwR8XudONRYLr1xKR3w%3A1615393269934&amp;source=hp&amp;ei=9fFIYJ-pNa6p5NoPg5GJoAY&amp;iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYEkABf7f2ZU6nEiLmoo2xJthGVcYwMZ2&amp;q=ideation+exercises&amp;oq=ideation+exer&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMYADICCAAyAggAMgYIABAWEB4yBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeMgYIABAWEB4yBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeMgYIABAWEB4yBQgAEIYDOgQIIxAnOgUIABCRAjoICAAQsQMQgwE6DgguELEDEIMBEMcBEKMCOgsILhCxAxDHARCjAjoFCAAQsQM6BQguELEDOggIABCxAxCRAjoECAAQQzoHCAAQhwIQFDoHCAAQsQMQQzoICC4QxwEQrwE6CAgAEBYQChAeUIsMWNEYYJUpaABwAHgBgAGuAogB0BWSAQcwLjcuNS4xmAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpeg&amp;sclient=gws-wiz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideation exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> we are going to use. We make sure that we invite participants with different backgrounds and experiences. Internally, we invite our researchers, designers, and engineers, and for clients, we explain how diversity enhances innovation and encourage them to include members from all relevant departments. On occasion, we will even bring in research participants, like subject matter experts that we\u2019ve interviewed or observed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the start of the session, we\u2019ll offer a brief problem statement that is derived from the research, and will walk participants through our design criteria, sharing key observations and insights from the research that led to those. We will fill our space with inspiration images, in addition to key images from our research. Realistically, the sky is never the limit when designing a product; there will always be constraints to the solution for any problem. More importantly, creativity actually thrives on constraints, as borne out by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/273590518_Creativity_and_Constraints_Exploring_the_Role_of_Constraints_in_the_Creative_Processes_of_Research_and_Development_Teams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychological research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052970203370604577265632205015846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-world analyses of innovations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Only then do we ideate, and often we do so by stepping through structured idea generation activities, such as<\/span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S.C.A.M.P.E.R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S.C.A.M.P.E.R.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six_Thinking_Hats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six Thinking Hats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">or <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morphological_analysis_(problem-solving)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morphological Analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">As we are ideating, we try not to judge the ideas, and we try to come up with as many different concepts as possible. Here are some of the concepts that came out of the idea generation session for the child\u2019s wearable medical device.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/?attachment_id=3736\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3736\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3736 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Concepts-1024x768.png\" alt=\"Numerous early concepts for a pediatric medical device that is worn\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Concepts-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Concepts-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Concepts-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Concepts.png 1422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">At the end of the session, we process the ideas. We will sort through the concepts, grouping those that are similar, and will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and how well each meets the design criteria that were established from the earlier phases. Obviously not all of the ideas generated can be pursued, but we find that this post-ideation discussion allows us to identify the best aspects of each idea, which can then be incorporated into other ideas, producing more robust solutions. Often this discussion also sparks new ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the ideas have been proposed, a decision needs to be made about which solutions should move forward in the design and development process. Later those solutions will be refined through prototyping and additional research.
