In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> phase, you\u2019ll process and analyze all of that information, transforming it into a knowledge base that is filled with research insights and design implications that will help generate solutions as you move on to the next phase.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Discover<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relied on generative or expansive thinking, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relies on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evaluative thinking<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Evaluative thinking is what you do when you analyze information and then use that information to evaluate and refine theories and discoveries. This is the type of thinking that helps you narrow in on a solution that will meet your users\u2019 needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to analyze your data; however, it\u2019s nothing like analyzing quantitative data. At Daedalus, we use a process called<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affinity sortin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">g, an interactive process in which we sift through all of what we saw and heard during our research, looking for trends and solitary\u2014but interesting\u2014findings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affinity sorting isn\u2019t a difficult process, but it can be a bit time-consuming. We first capture relevant observations from our research on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affinity cards<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be post-it notes, index cards, or printouts\u2014anything that can be easily moved around and repositioned. Relevant observations can be direct quotes from users you interviewed, observations you took note of in the field, as well as any relevant pictures you may have captured. We draw them from visit reports, debriefing notes, videos and photos from the visits, and interview transcripts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, here are some observations and quotes from research we conducted in a dialysis unit a few years ago<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that were later turned into affinity cards.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3695 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RelevantObservationsForAffinityCards-1024x465.png\" alt=\"A collection of observations (photos and quotes) from ethnographic research to be turned into affinity cards\" width=\"800\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RelevantObservationsForAffinityCards-1024x465.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RelevantObservationsForAffinityCards-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RelevantObservationsForAffinityCards-768x349.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RelevantObservationsForAffinityCards.png 1720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">When creating affinity sorting cards, there are a few key things to keep in mind:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Avoid combining multiple observations on a single affinity card\u2014keep them modular and distinct, so they can be sorted separately.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Make sure to choose rich, detailed, and vivid observations that are specific enough to preserve the relevant details.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Avoid summarizing or explaining on affinity cards\u2014just record what was seen and heard.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Remember: it\u2019s better to have too many cards than to have too few at this stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Once our sorting cards are ready, the research team takes over our office\u2019s conference room. It has a large table and is surrounded by wall-mounted whiteboards, so it gives us plenty of room to work. As a team, we discuss the contents of the cards and begin clustering them into meaningful groups. Often, we start by categorizing cards into topic groups and then work towards more nuanced clusters that begin to tease out some of the commonalities and differences. Once we\u2019re happy with our clusters, we articulate the theme that is represented by each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">We\u2019ll generally take a few hours or even the better part of a day for the first round of sorting. If we can, we&#8217;ll leave everything up for a day or two, and come back with fresh eyes. Other themes almost always emerge after we\u2019ve taken a bit of a break.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">The room usually ends up looking like this:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3694 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AffinitySortingRoom-1024x382.png\" alt=\"Post it notes sorted into groups on the walls of a room. \" width=\"800\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AffinitySortingRoom-1024x382.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AffinitySortingRoom-300x112.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AffinitySortingRoom-768x287.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AffinitySortingRoom.png 1869w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">After affinity sorting is complete and we&#8217;ve identified the themes of the research, it\u2019s time to transform those research insights into implications and design criteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A research <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a pattern detected from your research. It is often the theme of one of your clusters and either builds from a need that you heard expressed multiple times or it may stem from interesting comments you heard from a single participant. An <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implication<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> re-expresses your insight into a problem to be solved or a desire to be fulfilled, which will eventually become your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design criteria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Consider this example of the process from observation\u00a0\u2192 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">insight\u00a0\u2192 implication\u2192 design criteria for a hemodialysis monitor:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><em>Observations<\/em>: During visits, some clinicians mentioned having forgotten to tell the device that they had moved to and were measuring a new patient. Another mentioned that he\u2019d once forgotten to reinstate the patient\u2019s blood lines before moving to a new patient, and another mentioned almost forgetting to unclip the sensors from the patient\u2019s blood lines before moving the device.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><em>Insight<\/em>: There are numerous issues related to moving the device between patients.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><em>Implication<\/em>: There is a need for the clinician to be reminded of several steps that he or she needs to do before moving the device to a new patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><em>Design criteria<\/em>: 1) The device should detect when it is moved and 2) the device should provide alerts to the user when movement is detected if there are required steps that they have not taken.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Each cluster that you end up with and its relevant insight should similarly be transformed into implications and design criteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Define phase of UCD, we also create visual frameworks that capture the information that we are learning. A<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visual framework<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organizes complex information into a compelling story; one that guides solutions and can easily be shared outside of the core team to communicate the research findings and the team\u2019s progress.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Visual frameworks help you to better understand and explore your data, and also provide an avenue for other stakeholders (like administrators whose buy-in you might be aiming for) to be able to understand what you\u2019ve learned. font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">This process ensures that your design requirements are grounded in actual customer research, rather than being based on assumptions, preconceptions, and the personal experiences of the development team. It allows you to solve problems at the aggregate level, rather than one at a time.
