{"id":1806,"date":"2013-04-16T12:01:22","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T16:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thinking.is\/?p=1806"},"modified":"2024-07-11T10:59:33","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T14:59:33","slug":"daedalus-advocates-for-design-research-at-the-2013-hfes-international-symposium-on-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/?p=1806","title":{"rendered":"Management System for a Pediatric Heart Pump: A Design Research Case Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Carolynn Johnson, Daedalus Research Manager, recently presented <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/2327857913021015?journalCode=hcsa&amp;\"><em>Management System for a Pediatric Heart Pump: A Design Research Case Study<\/em><\/a> at the 2013 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care: Advancing the Cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinking.is\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/HFES2013.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1818 size-full\" title=\"HFES Symposium 2013\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/HFES2013.png\" alt=\"HFES 2013 International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care Logo \" width=\"373\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/HFES2013.png 373w, https:\/\/blog.daed.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/HFES2013-300x82.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">This year&#8217;s topic was &#8220;Advancing the Cause,&#8221; and presenters were asked to extend their message beyond &#8220;incorporate human factors&#8221; and &#8220;make it usable.&#8221; Simply put, Carolynn&#8217;s message was that <em>human factors and usability are <strong>NOT<\/strong> enough<\/em> &#8211; a perfectly usable product that adheres to all human factors may still fail. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Because a paradigm shift is occurring in healthcare. Treatments previously only envisioned as taking place in hospitals and clinics are moving into the home. Too often companies seem to believe that medical equipment (usable and rigorously tested for use in clinics) can be cleanly transitioned to the home with a simplified user manual and additional training. They neglect to consider the fundamental differences between the users and the environments; differences that should impact their designs.
